AN ALLEGED EXPOSURE

11 Lounger" m the "Taranaki Herald" has the following :— The Wellington "Evening Frees" some time ago published the following enigma, and offered a prize of a half a crown for the first correct solution sent m :— '* Man cannot live without my first, By night and day 'tis used ; My second is by all acoursed, By night and day abased ; My whole is never seen by day, And never used by night ; Tis liked by friends when far away, And hated when m sight." i Many ingenious answers such as " Ignis Fatuus," " Fire fl/," etc, were sent m, but the editorial reply was always "try agalu. " By degrees the priza for a oorreot filiation rose until at present it stands at £10 ! This tempting bait has sot manp brains at work to find the needed solution, I but all m vain. The faot is the author of the enigma, the late Arch-Bishop Whately, forgot to supply the answer, or it escaped notice when his papers were examined. There is uo answer hearing the author's imprimater, and the Welling ton " Presi" is only fooling its readers by enticiug them to rack their brains for a corrsot solution, which if given the paper would not accept as correct. I have no doubt that the oorreot answer has been gaeised by many and sent m only to be rejected. I hope this exposure of the game the " Press" is playing will put a stop to it.
