EXPENSE OF SIR J. VOXEL'S VISIT
TO THE EDITOR. Fir,— By a local m your inane of laatj night, I learn that the ratepayers of Ashburton have been charged with the expenses incurred m connection with the recent visit of Sir Julius Yogel. As a ratepayer, I object to this expenditure, and I further objeot, as one, who on a former occasion, had to pay out of ray own pocket a considerable part of the cost of a visit of Sir George Grty'a, The Mayor at that time "would, on no account, allow any each charge to be made upon the funds of the Borough," He even refused to send an iovitaUon to Sir George unless the expenses were gtiaranteed, Tour report said nothing of how Councillors voted, but I should very much like to know how the gentleman above alluded to Bided, he being still a member of the Council. It appears to me to be high time we had some new blood Infused into the Borough Ojunoll ; when Councilors can allow their partiality for any sect or party, to so warp their sense of justioe and fairness, as to pass an account like this. It indioates to my mind that they have been so long m the Council that they regard the Borough and its ratas ai their private property. — I am, etc., James Kbir.
