THE RANGITATA SEAT.

MR PALMER AT THE BINDS. DISGRACEFUL TREATMENT.

Our own correspondent at the Hindß, dating yesterday, writes to us as follows : — " Mr Palmer one of tho candidates fot the Rangitata seat, came to address the electors at Hlnda last evening, but, owing to his application having miscarried, he could not get the use of the schoolroom. About 8 p.m he explained to those present the cause fot the postponement of his address, when he was set upon by tome scoundrels who pelted him with eggs, and flour. He (Mr Palmer) was at their mercy. They followed him along the road, and every now and then dipped tussocks m water and soused him with them. The poor fellow was exhausted and thereupon B»t down saying " Well, if you want to kill me, do bo," I believe the men are known, and only most earnestly wish they may have to answer for their conduct. Sorely this la a case for the police to take up. Another correspondent says that "as Mr Palmer was leaving, he was chased by about a dozen horseman who covered him with showers of eggs, flour, and mud. He had to use stones for self-defence. 1 ' We entirely agree with our correspondents In condemning such cowardly proceedings and : think it is high time the police interfered for the protection of candidates.
