SOUTH RAKAIA ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting was held at the Board's office on Thursday. Present— Messrs Coster (Chairman), Allan, Lyttelton, and Stringfellow. The minutes o! the last meeting being confirmed, Mr Lyttelton apologised for the absence of Mr Mulligan, who was engaged at the Ashburton Court. The Clerk reported on the various works carried out during the month. The maintenanoe contractors were doing good work. Haslett had not completed his oontraot satis* faotorily, and therefore the amount was not entered on tho pay-sheet. He (the Clerk) had refused distinctly to pass the work. In reply to Mr Lyttelton, the Clerk stated that the crossing on Holmes' road was not completed. Mr Silcock interviewed the Board with re* gard to hiß metalling contract, which he had to leave last harvest time. In April last he was willing to go on with the work providing no penalty were inflicted. He would make the following offer without prejudice : — " The Board to make allowance for the ballast pit he had to open, refund his deposit, no penalty to be inflicted, and pay the balance due to him for the amount of work done." From this the difference between his contraot price and the present contractor's to be deduoted. If his proposals were agreed to all well, if not he would go to Court. He had some months ago sent m a claim for extra work inourred m opening a pit, of £8. After consideration m Committee it was resolved to allow the £8 asked for, the balance due to him, and his deposit, less £11 Bs, the difference between. the present contraotor's prioe and his own. Mr E. Biohards asked permission to make a new waterraoe crossing over the road from R.S. 18434 to 18435.— Resolved that permission be granted on the usual conditions. The Chairman reported that some work had been found for one of the unemployed m the settlement. The Clerk was instructed to have a number of ballast pits fenced.— Resolved to request the County Council to grant an acre of land for gravel purposes on one of the reserves. 6TOBM WATER SCHEME Consideration of this subject deferred till after a meeting with the Mount Hutt Road Board. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr Blackburn asked for the formation of the balance of Michael street. — Request ! granted. The N.Z. and Australian Land Company wrote, calling attention to the danger whioh would arise from cutting through the sandhills m forming roads, and stating that the Board will be held responsible for any damage arising therefrom. . The Clerk stated that tho contractor would see to the walling up of each outting as it was rnadet A number of settlement residents petitioned the Board for a sump, and the formation of footpaths m Wolaley street. — Resolved to have the work done. Mr Oxley wrote, requesting footpaths near Town Hall.— Work to be done. Messrs Holmes and Loughrey wrote re settlement of land claims. Prom thr same re Mr Anderson's land. — The Chairman was instructed to take the necessary steps. From the Government, advising that the balance of subsidy, £239 Is 3d was forwarded. From the same, enclosing rstes on Crown Lands, £4 11s 7d. It was resolved to redeposit £500 for six months. . Mr MoAnulty wrote, complaining that he could not commence his contract unlil the gorse was oleared off the road. — The Clerk to Bee to the same. Mr R< Taylor wrote, complaining again about the eand-blow's" on Baker's road, and hoping that the Board would have the same attended to at onoe. — The Clerk to inform Mr Taylor that the work would be done. Mr R. J. Dunn wrote, asking that the balance of his last year's contract be paid at once, as ho considered he had carried out bis contract m a workmanlike manner. He made complaints of the Board's conduct, also the Clerk's. •■ ••■ The Clerk said the work was not done, and this was corroborated by Mr Allan. Resolved that Mr Dunn's attention be called to olausa 4 m the - specification of his oontraot, and that the balance would not be paid till the work was done. Mr Ready complained of the water lying on his land. The Clerk stated that there was a natural watercourse through his land, and it would not lie if not stopped. The Clerk was instructed to report to next meeting. Messrs Fooks and Son wrote to Boundary road and Wakanui road district, stating that the matter would be considered at the next meeting. Mr Betts ivrote, asking for the formation of certain footpaths, and offering an advanoe of 10s per annum on the prioe given by Mr Turnar for.Reserve 1668.— The Clerk to have footpath done and reply that reserve was let. TENDERS. The following tenders were aooepted : — Tussooking, Contraot I.— lvess and Pearce, 7d per chain; No. 2.— T. Hussoy, lid per chain ; No. 3 — S. Gordon, 5d per chain ; No. 4.— G. Herron, 4id per chain ; No. 5. — Wf Palmer, 4d per chain. Metalling, Fergusson street.— M. Sheehan, Is 6d per yard. It was resolved that notice be given to oooupiers of land to clear all gorse off the roads at once, or it would be done by the Board and charged. Mr Allan moved that m view of having a more effective service the Clerk receive notice, and that tenders be called for a Clerk to devote his whole tim eto the Board's work. Mr Stringfellow thought no inorease m expenditure should Bhould be made. Consideration of the subject deferred to a full meeting. Mr Haslett) waited on the Board to explain his action with the Clerk with regard to his ! contraot. He considered he had done all the i work mentioned m his specification. The Clerk denied this, and called the Board's attention to the terms of the oontract. The Board requested Mr Allan to inspeot the work.with tha clerk and Mr Haslott, and report to the next' meeting. The Poundkeeper'sfbook was inspeoted and found oorroot. Accounts amounting to £141 7s 7d were passed for payment" and tho meeting adjourned. The members then met as a Cemetery Board but no business of interest was transacted.
