MBBUXTONAT WAKANUI.
Mr But on addressed a large meeting of electors on Monday evening m the Schoolrcono, Wakanui. Mr James Brown was vot«d to the chair, and introduced t!i« speaker m a few words, asking the audienca to give him a fair hearing. The eddresß was a resumi of the Ashburton one, with a few exceptions. In speaking of the pay of Civil servants, he said ha wan one when the eltction began, receiving tbe large salary of about fourpence a day, which he hud to resign on account of being a candidate. If the eleotors expected him to come fawning round them for voteß they would be mistaken ; he did not think it was manly or straightforward to do so much buttonholm; as some were doing If returned, he promised to do his best for tbe welfare of tie people generally, and especially to watch the industrial classes' interests. A largo number of questions wore asked and answered, apparently satisfactorily to moßt present, Mr Megoon moved a rery hearty vo^e of thanks to Mr Buxton, saying he had known him for many years, and he (Mr Buxton) was a perfectly honest and straightforward man, one whom the eleotors could trust their interest to m Parliiment. He also urged every man to uso bis vote and influence to promote tbe best interests of the masses. He (Mr Megson) spoke as an old politician of 50 year 6 standing, and he reconnted some of bis etrly experiences. Mr Oasis had much pleasure In seconding the motion, adding that he had known Mr Buxton for many yeara and had every confidence m him. Me Leadley said ha had pleasure m supporting tha motion. He said that more men of Mr Button's stamp were wanted m the House— more of their own class, the farmers. There had always been too many lawyers and newspaper men m the past consequently it was not fairly a House of Representatives. The motion wai carried unanimously* A vote of thanks te the chair terminated tke meeting.
