ASHBURTON JUBILEE MEMORIAL
TO THK BDITOB. Sißj-^Of all the proposals for a suitable Jubilee Mcmornl, I believe the mosl generally acceptable to (he subscribers v that of a fountain. No largo town should be without a fountain, bo constructor! as to supply the pure and precious liquid tc thirsty man and beast. An objectior named Was that there would be a difficult) m procuring jets of water rising to anj great height, fc-'uoh jets might be orna mental, but they would not bo useful, anc they are not at all necessary. Asa cloct has beeo mentioned, I can see no reason why a suitable one for tbe purpose couk not be provided out of the funds, anc placed over the fountain If erected a Bom 6 corner, say just across the road fron the Magistrate's Court, ii would be visible fr«m the Post Office and Railway Station as well as d^wn East street. The mentioi of the Railway Station reminds me tha all the drinking water available to travellers stopping at this large inlnn< town, fini seeking to slake their thira during the summer season, used to b found m a small brown colored gins water bottle m the ladies' waitiog-room I am, etc., WELL-WIBHER.
