NEW ZEALAND APPLES FOE THE ENGLISH MARKET.
Mr J. O. Brown, M.H.U., says the Home correspondent of the " Star," fe'la me he thinks New Zealand could ve>y well compete with Tasmania and South Australia m euppljiog apples to the English market at this timo of the year. So-called Australian apples (which really oome principally from Tasmania) are to be seen at Convent Garden and ar all first-cIBBB fruiterers m abundance just now, and realise high prices. The deinsnd for them during May, June, and July would indeed be practically unlimited if only a bettor mode of carriage could be devised. None but high-class fruiterers, vrhoße customers oan afford to pay tip top prices, care to touoh them now. The wholesale rate for a case is moderate enough, but oftener than not two out of every five apples are so badly bruised as to be ueeless for dessert purposes. The retailer consequently finds himself obliged to charge high prices for the good ones or to loss money.
