ALLEGED FORGERY.
A msn named Balfour was arrested by Detective Herbert ye»terday evening on a charge of forgery and ottering a cheque for £2 on the National Hank. Balfcur was formerly a reildent of T&rarjakl, and bt came to Auokland & short time ago with a Mr Dingle, a farmer of that place. Dingle, it appears, hf ■ a good farm, and Balfonr having expressed a desire to •peculatet it was agreed that he should porohase hii friend's land. He borrowed £4 from Dingle as apn llminary. While m the Victoria Hotel he determined to "have" Mr Luks, the landlord, and wrote oot a bogus cheque for £2, parporting* to be signed by Frederick Walker. The proprietor, teeing that he was an intimate friend of Mr Dingle's, readily cashed tbe dooament and paid the amount m fall. It was subsequently discovered that the cheque was not a genuine one, and Mr Luks last eight called m the aufltance of Detective Herbert. An adjournment was made to the lock-up, where Btlfoar admitted having enjoyed society at tbe expense of Messrs Dingle and Lukf. He was brought op at the Ooari this morning and remanded till Satarday.— ".Evening Bell"
