The Victorian Reign is unparalleled m the History of Great Empires Parity, Goodness, and Greatness. What alone enables us to draw, a just moral from the tale of Life ? Were I aikvd what best dignifies the present and consecrates the past ; wha alone enables as to draw a juit moral from the 'Jute of Life; what sheds tbe purest light upon our reason ; what gives the firmest strength to our religion ; what is belt fitted to soften tht heart of man and elevate his soul,— l would answer with LMsues, it Is Experience.— Lord Lytton. k TEREIBLE SURGICAL OPERATION. A FATAL MISTAKE. The " Cleteland (Ohio) Press," of February 23nJ, 1883, published an account of a fatal surgkal operation which caused a great commotion among medical men throughout the whole country, Dr Thayer, the most eminent f urgcon m Cleveland, pronounc'ng it scandalous. Tt appears that & Mrs X ing has teen suffering for many years from some disease which hud resisted the treatment of all the physicians m attendance. The disease commenced with a slight derangement of the digestion, with a poor appetite, followed by a peculiar indescribable distress m the stomach, a feeing that has been de cribed as a faint "all gone " sensation, a sticky slime collecting aboi \Ac teeth, causing a disagreeable taste. T hi < sensation was not removed by food, but, on the contrary, it was increased. After a vhi c the hands and feet became cold and sticky— Acold perspiration. 1 here wa3 a constant tired and languid feeling. Then followed a dreadriil nervousness, with gloomy forebodings. Finally the patient was unable to retain any food whatever, and there wa3 constant pain m the abdomen. All prescribed remedies fai'ing to give relief, and a consultation was held, when it was decided that the patient had a cancer m the stomach, and m order to save the patient's life an operation was justifiable. Accordingly, on the 22nd of February, tht operation was p*rformei by Dr Vance, m the presence of Dr Tuckermao, Dr Perricr, Dr Arms, Dr Gordon, Dr Capner, and Dr Halliwell, of the Police Board. The operation consisted m laying open the cavity of the abdomen and exposing the stomach and bowels. When this had been done an examination of the organs was made, but to tbe horror and dismay of the doctors there was no cancer to he found. The patient did not have a cancer. Wh'n too late the medical men discovered that they had made a terrible mistake ; lut they sewed the parts together and dressed the wound that they had made, but the poor woman sank from exhaustion and died m a few hours. How lad it must be for the husband of this poor womm to know that his wife died from the effects of a surgical operation that ought never to have been performed. If this woman could have UV.cn the proper remedy, viz., bought one of FEfIRIMAN'S MARVELLOUS STEAM WASHING MACHINES, And saved (he continual strain on her enleebled and weakly condition, brought about by a life ppent at the wash-tab for the comfort of her family, she might hare spent many happy years more amongst theta, and had her name handed cMwn to posterity as a model mother* ALBERT ROBERTS has foe sale,— Clovers, — BED, WHITE,' COWGRASS, ALSYKE, ANDgTBEFOIL.
