MR PURNELL'S MEETING.
TO THE EDITOR. Silt, — It has been pointed out to methat your report of the aboye meeting by simply giving the motion that I proposed " a vote of thanks " without giving the reason that I stated for doing so, might lea.fl the public to suppose that! was anything but friendly to Mr Powell's Candidature. The contrary is the fact. In proposing the motion, 1 expressed <my gratification that we had at least one gentleman amongst us who had the courage to put aside considerations of personal friendship, and give those of us who are opposed to the Government on the real issue before the country, further, taxation or retrenchment, an opportunity of declaring our voice. My only reason for not asking the meeting to carry a vote of confidence was my opinion that the, ballot box is the place to express that. v lam, etc., John A Cayqili..
