A FATAL MISTAKE. The "Cleveland (Ohio) Press," of Febtuary 13rd, ISB3, published an account of a fatal surgical operation which caused a great remmotion among medical men throughout the whole country, Dr Thaver, the most eminent surgeon m Cleveland, pronouncing it scandalous, It appears that a Mrs King has been suffering for many years from some disease which had resisted the treatment of all the phjsicians m attendance. The disease commenced with a slight derangement of the digestion, with a poor appetite, followed by a peculiar indescribable digress m the stomach, a feeing that has been described as a faint "all gone " sensation, a sticky slime collecting alxn fiie teeth, causing a disagreeable taste. Thi« sensation was not rcmoTcd by food, but, on the contrary, it was increased. After a *hi c the hands and feet became cold and sticky— acold perspiration. 1 here was a constant tired and languid feeling. Then followed a dreadful nervousness, with gloomy forebodings. Fintlly the patient was unable to retain any focd whatever, and there was constant pain m the abdomen. All prescri^ ed remedies fai ing to give relief, and a consultation was held, when rt was decided that the pa ien 1 had a cancer m the stomach and m order to save the patient's life an operation was justifiable. Accordingly, on the 22nd of February, the operation was p-rformei by Dr Vance, m the presence of Dr Tuckerma", I r Perrier, Dr Arms, Dr Gordon, Dr Capner, and Dr Halliwell, of the Police Board. The operation consisted m laying open the cavity of the abdomen and exposing the stomach and bowels. When this had been done an examination of the organs was made, but to the ho-ror and dismay of the doctors there was no cancer to le found. The patient did not have a cancer. Wh<?n too late the medical men discovered that they had made a terrible mistake ; lut they sewed the paits together and dressed the wound that they had made, but the poor woman sank from exhaustion and died m a few hours. How iad it must be for the husband of this poor wonvn to know that his wife died from the t fleets of a surgical operation that cught never to have been performed. If this woman could have taken the proper remedy, viz. , bought one of FERMMAN'S MARVELLOUS STEAM WASHING MACHINES, And saved the continual strain on her enfeebled and weakly condition, brought about by a life spent at the wash-tub for the comfort of her family, she might have spent many happy years more amongst them, and had hir name handed down to posterity as a model mother. ! !: '.
