ELECTRICITY AND EARTHQUAKES.

The following facts have been made the subject of a very oarefol inveatigation by the French military authorities, and there appears to be no doubt as to their absolute correctness : - On February 28, daring the continuation of the disastrous earthquakes m the Riviera, a soldier m the fort of Tete-te-Ghien at Nice was engaged m working a telegraph instrument communicating with another part of the town. At this moment the third earthquake of the morning took place ; thla was the least violent of the three great ahooki. The Boldler was thrown from his seat and received a severe eleotrio shook through both arms and aoroai his chest. It was some minutes before he recovered the power to move and he remained inthe hospital for the root of the day. The important queation now arises (aayi the " Electrioan ") whether the electric phenomenon is the cause or an effect 9 In the light of the recent experiments of Professor Milne m Japan, it will be seen that an earth catront may always be looked for as the result oi an earthquake, though when we consider the eiormous amount of eleotrio energy which mast have been m play m order to knoci down a man through what was practioaly a abunt-oirduit of comparatively enormous reeistacce, it is impossible to deny that the electric force may as wfli bare been the cause as the result of /ho dutarfc«noe. as3)ieat _ aJ
