To show the extremes resorted to by some m politios, we (" Evening Bell ") may say that one question put to Mr David Goldie last night at the Foresters' Hall was : "Is it true your father went to Tasmania as a prisoner?" It is a little hard to conceive anybody being dastardly enough to put such a question, even had the insinuation been true, whioh, of course, it is not. It was about as disgraoeful and cowardly an insult as we ever remember, and the audience marked their displeasure and disapproval of it by loud and continued cheering and applause when Mr Goldie answered it m the negative, giving particulars as to the ship and com* panions his father had when he came to tne colonies. A travelling sleight-of-hand man visited an Indian enoampment near Lewiston, Idaho, the other day. Seeing a small dog, he ashed how muoh they would take for him. The Indians said they did not want to sell. " Him very good dog," said the magioian, rubbing him down at the back, at eaoh stroke taking a handful of money from the end of his tail* also from hia mouth, nose, and ears. The Indians looked on m stolid silence, but after the magioian went away they took the dog down to the river bank and killed and disseoted him. To their great obagrin they found that the sleight-of-hand man had milked him of all the money. Statutory Declaration— l, Franz Baabe, Ironbark, Sandhurst, m thejoolony of Victoria, Australia, do solemly and sinoerely deolar* that on the 25th June, 1877, my son Alfred, six years of age, was accidentally hurt with an axe on the knee. I at once took all pains to secure medical assistance. However, m spite of all efforts, on the 27th Augutt, 1877, the opinion was given by Dr Maogillivray that an amputation of the injured limb had become imperative, m order to save life. At this juncture I called on Messrs Sander and Sons, procuring some of their Extract of the Eucalyptus Globulus, and by the application of the same I had the satisfaction ot seeing my son within a fortnight out or all danger, and to-day he is recovered. I may just add that it was when the crisis had been reached that the Extract referred to was first applied. Any I make this solemn declaration, etc, — Franz Baabe. Declared at Sandhurst, m the colony of Victoria, Australia, this seventeenth day of Ootober, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-seven before me, Motitz Conn, J.P,-» (Advt.)
