On Friday, the 22nd \uat, (osys the Lake County Prene) while play loir on the Shotover, Mt Thomas O Kauu'a little ohild, a girl aged about three yeart, fell into the river. Mrs O'Kane at once rushed down, and jnraped into the river to endeavor to i&ve her child. She failed to reach it, and was herself carried away by the current, whioh at the point was 7ery strong, the river being deep there too. Neighbors received the alarm, and immediately went to the reacue. Mr Gilchrint (toucher) euccesded m bringing Mrs O'K-ine to sboro, but m a very exhausted condition. The child was still being carried away by the corrent, while Mr Ohegwldden, followed by hiß dog, was running after it along the beach; Suddenly he was stopped by stepping into a patch of quicksand, and it Beamed that the little one would bo 'lost, when to tho surprise and joy of the onlookers, Mr j Chegwidden'a dog nprang into the river and brought the obild safely to laud. The little one, who had been carried down 300 or 400 yards by the stream, was apparently lifeless, but prompt measures were taken for restoring animation, and m this the willing helpers Bucoeeded after tl/p patient «nd unceaaing application of th« usual' remedies. MraO'Kane was so weak that she hadto'ba carried up from the river, and it took two or three days before Bhe recovered from the. shock which she srialained. ■ '.
