SOUTH RAKAIA ROAD BOARD.
The usual meeting of the above was held on Thursday. Present— Messrs Mulligan, Stringfellow, and Lyttelton. On the motion of Mr Mulligan, Mr Lyttelton was voted to the chair. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmod. Apologies were received from Messrs Coster and Allan for unavoidable absence. clerk's bepobt. The Clerk reported that the maintenance contractor for the present year had commenced work, Mr Dunn, one of last year's contractors, had not finished bis work satisfactorily, and bis cheque is held until the work is finished. The wet had retarded Murphy's metallisg contraot. Poisoned grain had been distributed over the district, and been very effeotual, an immense number of birds being killed. A few chains of metalling is much required on the north belt of the Village] Settlement, near Murphy's. The water could not be got away, and a sump was required. Ferguseon street required metalling, as the traffic was very considerable. Shehan was progressing well with his contract;. COKEESPONDENOE. Mr Haslett wrote stating that he had been unable to commence his contract, but would do bo next week. — The Clerk to inform him that the work must be finished this month; Mr Moodie wrote asking for employment. Mr P. Coffey wrote re the state of footpaths 1 near his property. — Decided to shingle same* " The County Council, Ashburton, wrote asking for the amonnt of rates collected on which subsidy waß claimed from the Government. — The Clerk stated that the information had been supplied. Mr Brooks wrote re poisoned grain and the variation m weights of sacks. Messrs Holmes and Loughrey wrote re settlement of account for gravel pit taken from Mr Story. — Tho same was put on the paysheet. • • • Mr Purnell wrote, forwarding cheque for rates recovered, and enclosing his own account. The Mount Hutt Boad Board wrote, asking if this Board was willing to enter into a joint agreement to carry out a storm water scheme. — Consideration deferred till next meeting. Mr W. Cox wrote respecting the road near the parsonage being m a very bad Btate, and dangerous for traffic. — The Clerk was instructed to call the contractors attention to it. Mr Lyttelton complained of the last made Btorm water crossing being m a bad state, and stock could not be crossed. — Decided to put m some iron pipes. BUMP. The sump on the. Main Biver Boad required clearing out. — The work to be done | as soon as possible. CROSSINGS. Mr Mulligan said there were many complaints about the water-race crossings on Mainwaring's and Eyle roads. — The Clerk was instructed to have them attended to. MISCELLANEOUS. It was resolved to metal Fergusson street for about seven ohains. Tenders to be called for the work. At was decided to employ Mr Moodie to repair the road near the personage, providing his price was reasonable. The Clerk stated that nothing as yet had been done with regard to the Chertsey boundary road and the Wakanui Boad Board. It was decided to call for tenders for tussocking the main roads. Besolved not to procure any more poisoned grain at present. It was decided not to carry out the work mentioned by the Clerk, m the villiage settlement, until it was asked for by the settlers. ■ The Clerk stated that Mr Anderson had given notice of a claim for £35, for damages done to his land ; this had been forwarded to the Board's solicitors by the Chairman's instructions. Besolved that the Chairman be authoiised to take any necessary action with regard to taking land on rural seotion 16215. The pound book was inspected and found correct. Accounts amounting to £192 18a Gdwere passed for payment. The following tenders were accepted :— For forming and shingling footpaths m the village settlement, T. Cronin, at 63 per chain; for Aotpn Biver Boad, skim ploughing at Is per ohain; shingling, at Is 3d per yard; reducing sandhills and walling up same, and making cutting to riverbed, £18. The meeting then adjourned.
