♦ Dunedin, A.uguat 3. Mr Larnaob, Minister of Mines, addressed his oonstltaenls at South Dunedin to night. He said the Government were united la the opinion that borrowing mast be on a moderate soale, and, personally, he thought that about two millions would finish the neoeaaary pabllo works m progress. He was averse to more than £400,000 a year being spent out of loans He defended the Government from charges of extravagance, and contended that their Baviogs this year would amount to £136,000. Referring to reports that dissensions existed among the members of the Government, he denied that they were correct, and they would stand or fail with Sir Julius Yogel, who, although not popular with some of the electors, who oonsiderod by his colleagues as an able man and worthy of the confidence of the country. Turning to the education question, wnile he admired the earnestness and consistency of the Premier he differed from him m the attitude he took up with regard to retrenchment m this department, and he thought that even the Premier would be brought to Bee that it was possible to make redactions. He thought the manner m which the Catholics maintained their tohools should be a lesson to ue, He denounoed the cry of retrenchment as an adcaptcuidiirii appeal, although he did not deny that retrenchI ment was neoeer ary, and referred to the former action of the Opposition leaders as a proof of their lmincerity. He defended the uaefuloußß of the Portfolio of Mines, and enlarged upon what had been done m developing the paining Industry.
