Wellington, August 1, In the Supreme Ooart m banco Mr Justice Richmond de'ivered an important judgment, la the case Walker v the Wellington and Manawtta Railway Ox the Compensation Court had awarded plaintiff £1500, compensation for land taken by the Company and the question aroie as to whether tand rested m the Company by an order of the Compensation Court is liable to stamp, duty as a conveyance on sale. His Honor decided that the expropriation of properly by virtue of an dot of the Legislature was certainly a conveyance, but not a couvej anoe on Bale. The transfer m the oase m ques'ion was a compulsory one, and therefore not liable to stamp duty. Mr Travers said the decision involted a Jarga question, as it •Sooted the Native land duties. His Honor said he was sorry for that, as the exohequer coald not at the preßont time afford to lose any of its revenue.
