TEMPERANCE MEETING AT FLEMINGTON.

- ♦ ■— On Friday evening last the regular meeting of the Gospel Temperance Society, and Band of Hope was held m the Flemington Schoolroom. There were about seventy persons present and the Rev. A. Blake cconpied the chair. The meeting having been opened by hymn 17 and prayer, the Chairman drew attention to the ravages caused by drink and to the fact that the Temperance question waß coming within the range of practical politics Mr Wheeler read a 7ery cleverly oomposod piece entitled, " The Biography of a Porter Bottle," which arres'.ed Attention sb well by its grim and ghastly details as by its humor. Meg Williamson sang the favorite piece, " Fired," to the delight of the audience. Mr Harding , (m the absence of Mr G, W. Andrews, who had fully intended being present but for whoie absence the Chairman apologised) explained the working of the benefit Scclety m connection with the Sons of Temper anoe Lodge, and any who desired to join were invited to remain at tbe close. Mr Dak era gave a Temperance song entitled "Success m life," whioh was so much appreciated that he had to respond to the call by giving another, Mr 11. Giimour read an exceedingly amusing piece illustrative of the evils of intemperance, and Mr J^mes Osborne gave a Temperance Song m a very pleasing manner. Mr Dunn gave a reading entitled, " Does aliohol help work," by Dr A. Clark, Physician In ordinary to the Queen. The conclusion arrived at by convincing experiments was that, except Apparently or temporarily, it did not. Mr Blake gave an interesting reading entitled " J°y>" And a very pleasant meeting was brought to a olose.
