Quite recently a working jeweller named Simpson, m Brighton, England, met with a ftrange piece of luok at an auction m that town. A picture of a negro, m an old and dilapidated frame, was pnt up as a lot, and was knocked down to him " for a mere Bonrc,", amid the jeers of' the' brokers Md'oUnec itwndants of the 'rooms. On the back of the ianvass, however, Mr Simpson had noted, when the pictures were on view the previous a»y, the words " Dr. Johnson'a Servant ; " And his cariosity being stimulated thereby, he referred to "Boswell," and to the "Life of Reynolds," when he found thas Sjr Joshua had' painted at least one portrait of: John Williams, the black who was so long m the iirvive 1 of Johnson.
