Christchcrch, August 1. It is understood that Mr Hulbert retires from the contest for Ohristohurch South, not being eligible as he has got a oontract for supplying o»ps to the police. Timaru, Aegust 1. In the case of a man charged at the R.M. Court this morning with laying poisoned grain m a garden m the borough, ft transpired that the man was a gardener and had obtained gaain from the Levels Road Board to kill sparrows. He asked what be was to do m selfprottction as his beds were ravaged by sparrows. The Bench declined to advise. Charges of sheep stealing (1) five, (2) six sheep from Oannlngton station, Pareora, against a bullook driver named Thos. Terry is now being heard. A mate of Terry's gave information, which led to tht finding of the skins on Terry's premises. It is said there is rivalry on the part of the two men for the affections of a young woman. W. Little, manager, has pretty fairly identified the skins. Mr Hay defends the ease, whlohso far, is not very strong. DuwßDiN, August 1. .- Jaa.
