RAID ON PARIHAKA.

4 RESISTANCE OF TBE NATIVES. BAYONETS USED. Hawbra, July 30. The Opunake correspondent of the " Star " telegraphs this morning :— lt is rumored that Te Whetu and another Native, reoently convicted of sly grog selling, are to be arrested. The rumor Is supportod by tho faot of 20 of the permanent mllltla and two sergeants, under the Sergeant Major, having gone to Puogarehu this morning, where are also all the available police force. Tho Pungarehu correspondent of the " Hawora Star" writes that the Inspector Pardy, Constables Twomey, Henry, Roche, Hollo and a foroo of 21 Permanent Artillery went to Parihaka to arrest Te Whetu. When the attempt was made by 1 the Constables a genera) rush was made ' by tha Natives to prevent the arrest, Oonatable Twomey being thrown to the ground. Constable Ilocho got a severe handling. The order was given to the Permanent Force to fix bayonets, whiob checked tho Native men and women assisting to resist the arrest, Te Whetu was thrown by Roche but his wife lay on him to prevent the bandouffa being put on. The Natives were at last overocme and threo prisoners were taken and hand, ooffed for attempting to rescue. Te Whetu wis taken to Pnngarehu m a waggon, tbe othors walking m ohargo of tho Permanent foroe. The aTair lasted 15 to 20 minutes.
