A TERRIBLE OPPONENT.
The latrst specimen of latter day marine fighting architecture is the Sans Pareil, which is briefly described by '• Engineering" as followjs :— The Sans Pareil was launched from tho Thames Iron Works yard on Monday, May 9. Tho following are the chief elements of design : — Length, 340 feet; breadth, 70 feet; depth, 37 feet, 6 inches ; displacement m tons, 10,470; engines, 7500 Indicated horsepower natural draught, and 12,000 indicated horse power forced draught, by Meßßrs Humphrys, Tennant and Co. Armament :— Two 16-inch 111-ton guns twelve 6-inch 5-ton guns, Dine 3-pounder quick- firing guns, one 10 inch 29 ton gun, twelve 6»pounder quick-firing guns, two 1-inch Nordenfelt guns, eight 14-inch Whitehead torpedo tubes, and four 0.45 inch Nordenfelt guns The Sans Pareil has 170 water-tight compartments, necessitating the introduction of 969 water tight doors, scuttles, and valves, and the steam engines, main and auxiliary, amount to 55 m number. The dead weight of the Sans Pareil is stated to be 6000 tons, a greater weight than any launched m this country Bince the Great Eastern.
