ASHBURTON A. AND P. ASSOCIATION
The annuol general meeting of the Ashbortoa Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held at the Arcide Chambers yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance of members, and the President, Mr M. Stitt, presided.
COMMUTE MBETIKG. Prior to the business of the acnual meeting being proceeded with, a Committee mcc.ing was held, at which » letter from Mr D. Thomas was raad la regard to some yearling Ayrshire bulls exhibited by Messrs QUrk Bros, at the las annaal show. It appeared there was no cUbb for these and the animals were therefore catalogued "for exhibition only?' Howerer, the merit Was so high that the judges awarded tha balls a "first" and " second " respectively, but the Seoretary discovered that the rules of the Sooiety did not permit of aiy othex than '♦ highly commended" and •' commended " tickets being issued. Mesirs Olark Bros, being breeders and exporters of stock, and the matter thus being of considerable ■Importance' to them, asked that In aooord* ance with the Judges' decision first and seoond tiokets might be granted them, such an award of course not committing the Association to giving any 'money prizes. — The matter was considered at much length. — Mr D. Thomas moTed-r " That the awards as made by the Judges m Ayrshire bullß (extra atook), y'z , Ist and 2nd priz jb, qe given effect to In the case of Messrs Olatk Bros. "—The motion waa duly seconded.— The voting was equal, and the Chairman, though sympathising very much with Messrs 01 irk Bros, was compelled to give hi* casting vote againafc the motion, as ho thought it dangerous to disregard the rules of the Association. :
KEPOET AKD BAIAKOB-SHBBT. The Committee's ireport was read M folio wb :—
Your Committee m presenting thli *§• port regret that during the past year, the Association, though still holding Its own, . has made no material progreis la Iti working among the farmers In the district. Those to whom this Association should be of the most benefit seem to prove the moat apathetic m its support, and jour Committee have still t) complain that;* few willing hands do almost entirely the whole work of the Society. Regarding t\. c figums r hown tn the balanoe>iheel presented with (this report, it will be noticed that members' nabsorlptlons hire slightly decreased, chiefly through the uon-payraent by members of their tnb« Eorlptionß, many of which will, no doubt, be colleoted during the coming year. The sale of privileges this year showed » serious deoreaae, only netting £17 17f «s against £42 14s 61 the previous year. The entry fees amounted to £94 "8s M against £100 la 6d the previous year) but the number of entries received showed a reduction accounting for the above de crease. The other figures tn the balac ae* sheet soarcely need comment, with the exoeptlon of the gate money, "wfc4s!l»« B s last year rose to £78 13i 3d a«^ againßt £50 18b lid m 1885. The annual horse parade wai : held ©n Saturday, 2nd October, 1886, only 12 entries coming on parade, bat it iioon* fidently expected that this year the number will be largely increased. The ninth annual show of stock, implements, etc, took place on Friday, 29th Ootober, 1886. Although the number of entrlei only totalled 465 as against 533 m 1885. still the quality of the stock,, etc., wu fully tfqual to that exhibited m any previous show. The attendance of the poblio w«i remarkably good, as la shown by the increase m the gate money. In conclusion your Committee beg most strongly to urge that members should take more active interest m the work of the Asaoolatlon. It is with great difficulty that even a quorum can be got together when bast* ness of a good deal of importance has to be discussed. As a good many of the regular exhibitors coma from the south Bide of tha river It is a question for the incoming Committee to consider whether or not the next sho* should be held at TiDwald, JFor the information of mem> bers a comparative statement of the entries for the laat ilx yean li attaohed to this report.
