Melbourne, July 26 In the Assembly this eveping, Mr Gillies, the Colonial Treasurer, delivered his Budget Statement. He congratulated the country upon the satisfactory state of the finances. He estimated the revenue for the current year at and the expenditure at leaving with the present balance m hand, a balance to 1887-88 of The total amount expended on railways to June 30th was £26,000,000, upon which 4)6 per cent, interest was realised. He proposed to increase the duties on imported sugars and produce of the sugar cane to 3s 6d per cwt. ; if bonded and refined m Victoria is 6d per cwt M and on best other sugars 6s per cwt., the duties to come into effect on July 27th. The duty upoa dressed timbers would be variously increased, undressed timbers, including kauri, being admitted free.
