ELECTION GOSSIP.
♦ Auckland, July 26. Sir B. Stout addressed a public meeting m (he City Hall to-night. The Mayor of Auckland, Mr Devore, was m the chair. The building was crowded to excess. Fir R. Stoat referred to an artlole which had appeared m the " Now Zealand Herald " bat morning attacking hia polioy, and went on to speak of the retrenchment effected by the Government. He sated that the tariff proposals were framed with the idea of assisting local indqstriee. He iealt with the property tax exemption, Civil Service retrenchment, and Land Acquisition Bill, and defended the speolal settlements expenditure. He also spoke it some length on the education vote, opposing its reduction. Sir R Stout reoelf ed a patient hearing, and a vote of tnanka was tendered at the close of the address. Mr B. Thompson addressed the electors of Mareden at Orapohue on Friday, and received a vote of confidence. Mr H, T. Garrett is oat for NewtoD. Sir |M. O'ftorke met the eleotoro of Mauukau *t Onehunga Hall to-nlgtit when he received a vote of thanks and confidence. He advocated, retrenchment and partial protection, and opposed a reduction m the rducation vote, on the higher standards and the abolition of Boards cf Eduoation. He euloglied the tillage settlement scheme, and thoapht the perpetual leasing clause was its one fhw. Westporx, July 26. Mr O'Conor, candidate for the Boiler, addressed the eleotors at DennUfcon last night. He was warmly questioned, and at the conclusion a vote of no-confidenoe was passed, ... Dunedin, July 26. Dr Fitcbett addressed the eleotoro of Dunedid Central this evealng, and received a vote of thanks and confidence. He announced himsblf a protectionist and a Government supporter. Ikveroaegiij,, July 26. Mr Geo. Froggat, candidate for Awarua j addressed the eleotors to-uight. He said be would Bupport a Government which brought forward liberal measures whioh he could approve. He was for a maximum price of twenty shilling* an aore for Crown lands, cheap money for farmers by Government loans. He was for retrenchment generality and declared against tbe present Government, He received a vote of confidence.
