FROM AUSTRALIA IN 28 DAYS
At the launch of the Ormnz the premise was held out that she would make it poaßible to pass- from Australia to Great Britain within a month. That promise is within a day or two of being more than fulfilled. The ship has reached Suez on her first return voyage from Australia m 21 days from Adelaide, 'Ihls is not only the fattest run m record, but «8 the usual time for the run between Suez and London, by Naples, la seven dayn, it foilowa that, barring accidents, tho mails by the Ormnz will be m Lon.-'on m 28 daya from South Austra ft. The Sbormar which has thus for the first time brought Australia within fonr weeks of Great Britain was built by Messrs John Eider and Co., and her engines are the most powerful triple expansion ly^a f.flja\ At tho lime of her arrival at Su z oa Monday a 1 c w<ib one day behind the P. and O.raail etoamer which left Melbourne a week befor3 her. It will be interesting to note whether she wi 1 overtake the Masailia before she arrives tt Plymouth. The course taken by the Ormaz m going rouud by Naples is several hundreds < f miles longer than the way by Malta, and the Massilia haß 24 hours' start from Port Said ; but the higher speod of the Ormnz Is likely to stand her m good stead, and it is not unlikely that for the first time tho Orient a'eamer will reach Plymouth m advance of the P. and O. steamer which left Australia a woek earlier. It may be noted that the highly subsidised Germnu mail line Is allowed 43 days to Adelaide, whereas the Orient Hue, with scarcely any subsidy, has now made the voyagfl possible within a month. In this case the foreigners do not chow to advantage.
