ELECTION GOSSIP.
Mr J D Knya announces himself as a candidate for the Lincoln districts. We understand he ia a " fair trader," aad would oppose most of the measures of the present Government. Ht aifobd, Jaly 21. G. A. Marchant} a candidate for Taranaki, addressed the electors lsst night. He favors general retrenchment, and wtuld cut down education to the Fourth Standard, sweeping away higher education altogether. Ue condemns perpetual leases and village settlements, opposes the Government, bub will not pledge himself to any leader. A vote of confidence was unanimously passed. Wellington, July 21. Mr W, J. Hunt hag daolined to contest Wellington Booth. Wellington, Ju'y 22. Political speeches are now becoming j frequent and so far the meetings have all ! been orderly, Mr Izird at South We'llngton, and Mr Mason at the Butt, both declare themselves independent, but the former sympathises with the Opposition. He supported Freetrade snd opposed Bible reading In schools. He obtained a vote of oonfidonce. Mr Mason advocated retrenchment, Protection, and reduction m the cost of eduoition A vote of thanks was acootded him. . Blenheim, July £1. Sir Robtrb Stout addressed » meeting of eleotors and non-elect >rs here to-night The building was rrowded. The speech was chit fly devoted to the defence of the village settlement scheme and the eduoa* tion system. He deo'ared he would rather retire than give wav on questions of land settlement and education. Mr H. Dobson proposed a vote cf thanks ; Mr G. Henderson seconded Mr S J Macalister propped, us an amendment, a vote of thanks and confidence, which was carried. Sir R. Stout was heartily cheered , and left for Wellington immediately after the meeting. Wbstport, July 21. Mr Munro, for Bullor, spoke at Dennteton last night, and rtooived of vote of confidence, »s against one of thanks, by a majority of over 213. Oamartt, July 21. JVCr T. W. BUhop, addressing the eleotors of Oamaru this evening. There was a large attendance. The candidate's remarks were principally directed against the Government.
