Any fresh applications reoeived up to the time of issuing the writs are to be placed upon a supple* mentary roll. It Trill thus be seen that applications can be received to August 14th, Last evening about five o'olook Mr Charles Baid left his horse and light spring cart outside Mr Pfuham's house, opposide the County Saleyarcß, the horse being frightened m coma way started for home, and made the journey safely at a great pace, until rounding the oorner of the Domain, opposite the goods shed, where ths trap came into collision with the guard post with tuoh force as to snap this off. just above the ground, the trap and horse then turning completely over, and landing m the water channel on the opposite Bide of the road, where Mr George Gates pluokily held on to the horse's head until several. willing hands unooupled the harness and righted the trap, whioh seemsd very little the woraa for the capsize, the horse, a well bred and rather spiritrd one, did not appear to have suffered any damage, whioh was very fortunate, considering the rough tumble it received. About one hundred persons of both sexes were present at the inaugural meeting of the Ashburton Temperance Club held last night at the Club's room, Saunders 1 Building. After singing one verse of the National Anthem, the Bey D. MoNicoll invoked the Divine blossing on the undertaking, and th«n proceeded to explain the oircumstanoes*oonneoted with the origin of the Club and methods proposed for oarrying it on. The Women's Christian Temperance Union had the honor of proposing the movement, whioh was meant to oounteraot eomo of the evil influences by whioh young men were b«set, and also to provide a cheerful room with pleasant associations and innocent recreation for those whos o homes were the reverse of comfortable. Magazines, periodicals, and the daily papers would be found on the table, and draughts, chess, and kindred games were provided. If the Club proved suooeisful, and obtained commensurate support, classes would be formed, and possibly leotures on elementary soienoe with other subjects might be given, ■nd he also hoped some day to sea a gymasium m connection ,'wfth]the Club. The entrance fee had been fixed at eighteen pence, with a monthly of one shilling ; lads under sixteen to be oharged one shilling •ntrance fee. Thejrooms would be opened daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and refresh mental were obtainable at a small oharge. The rev gentleman concluded by stating that, with judioious management, the Club would be able to maintain itself without any extraneous financial help, but he solicited contributions of books, poriodicals etc. Several songs and ohoruses were sung, and a oouple of readings given, the rest of the ovtoing being muoh of a "free-and-easy " desonptlon, the indispensable tea and coffee I with other light comestibles giving an air of 1 sooiableness to the proceedings whioh were very enjoyable, and augured well for the suocesa of the future. Thi Canterbury Coursing Club announoo elsewhere that the Canterbury Stakes and Puppy Stakes will be run on the Lagmhor Estate on August 3rd and 4ib. „ Messrs Orr and Alooro have been appointed tola, agents m the Ashburlon county for Hartley's Patent Steam Washer.
