The Weather. Chbistohurch, July 20 The rainfall for 24 hours to 9 a.m. was B*4B inches. The weather Is now shewing signs of olearlrjg. The Avon rose three feet and flooded the roads In the northeast part of the town. No houßeß were entered by the water. Tbe streets m the south of the town were flooded. There has been no damage except to tho gardens and nothing serious is reported from the country. The railways are all right. A Schoolhouee Burned. ■~ Timaexj, July 20. The sohoolhouse at Winchester, 16 miles north of Timaru, wsb burned down, at 12 o'olook last night. The origin is unknown. Banquet. A grand banquet tendered to the Mayor, Mr Moss Jonas, m recognition of his splendid services m connection with the Jubilee Celebration, was held last eight. There was a very large attendance. Mr Dawson, the reotor of the High Sohool presided, and the proceeding's were a complete buocmb. Ddath of A Veteran. DuflEDiN, July 20. Captain Austin, an old resident of the Lakes district, died suddenly. He had served m the Crimean and New Zealand fin. . /
