— + — : Mr Handley, one of the candidates (or the Waitotara Beat, has withdrawn m favor of Mr Hutchison, Ministerialist. This leaves three m the field, Messrs Hutohißon, Bryce, add Morgan. The last ! two are Opposition candidates. Mr Morgan's candidature is looked upon an an undisturbing element m the contest, the struggle really being between Messrs Bryoe and Hutchison. It ib likely to be a severe contest. It is Btated that Sir George Grey has been asked to deliver an address m Wanganoi, and has consented to do so thre> diys before the eleotion. New Plymouth, July 19. Mr Snell addressed the New Plymouth electors last right when a vote of thankfj and confidence was passe J, The meeting was not a lar£e one but was enthusiastic. Kaiapoi, Jaly 19. The Hon. tha Minister of Public Works addressed his constituents at Kaiapoi on Monday night. A very large audience were present and m a lengthy speech the hon; gentleman gave bis opinion on the political topics of the day. He took credit for his Government having effected a very considerable saving m the -various departments, and foreshadowed further economy. He dilated at some length on the future Bavlng to be effect< d m the railway department and advocated re ! treuchment ; general borrowing to be only I resorted to for carrying out existing contractsandreprodnctiveworks. Frcquentspplause was accorded the. speaker, and at the close of the meeting a hearty vote of thanks was aocorded him. Dunedmt, July 19. Mr Elder has retired from, the contest for Port Chalmers.
