At least half of the Gardens mentioned above are kept by the Govern* ment, 18 per cent by universities, some* times In conjunction with the general or olty government, 11 pec cent by cities alone, and 5 per cent by private donations Out of the same number 94 per cent are always open to the public, and 70 per per oenfc publish reports, or contribute In some auoh way to scientific research.
