♦ — ' Auckland, June 15. The case against Charles Aitken, late ledger-keeper of the Bank of .New Zealand, charged with forgery, was dismissed at the Police Court to-day, the cheque alleged to have been forged not having been produced. At the Matamata Estate, on Wednesday evening, Mr J. 0 Firth, the late proprietor, bid farewell to his old employees, when he presented gold . medals and certificates of long service to fifteen of tha men, six others receiving certificates only. The Natives of the district of the Ngatfhinerangi tribe were also present, six of them also reoeiving gold medals. Mr Firth also delivered an address, m which he referred to his long connection with the Matamata Estate, and his efforts^ settle the people upon the land. V WsLamxoTst, 3"bily; 16. The claim was £1500, as compensation for deprivation of sea frontage, and consequent loss of trade, owing to the construction of the Te Aro reclamation. ' The premises 6f Mr S. Hoffer/' fancy goods dealer, were broken into last night, and jewellery valued at £40 was stolen. Dra Mickle and Cooke ace gazetted additional public vaccinatbre ■-, for the Christchurch district. Mr William Sparrow is gazetted Captain of the Aahburton Guards. ..; ■ . - TbvuEDis, July 15. About £200 has been, so far, oolleoted for the Queen's Jubilee Convalescent Fund. A new Chamber, of Commerce with a present membership df 34, was fairly floated to-day. Mr G. L. Dennistoa was elected President.
