The first social gathering m St Stephen's Bohoolroom will bp hold on Thursday evening at 8 o'olook.
It will be remembered that at the last meeting of the Borongh Counoil a question was asked whetbar the Counoil bad power to impose a license faejon the itinerant salesmen popularly called "Cheap jaoks," for the privilege of disposing of their wareß within the preoinots of the Borough. It was pointed out (hat lately two or three of those perauaeivC'toahnered gentleman had driven a thriying business for a few days eaoh m the town, and had departed with good round sums of ABbburtqn oash, to the corresponding detriment of looal salesmen, Moreover, the "Choap jack" is one of thoso fortunate individuals whom munioipal rates and taxes trouble not, and therefore the Counoil agreed that it waß extremely desirable that something m the form of a license should be enforced. The Mayor; undertook to look into the matter. This he did, and at last night's meeting of tho Council ho reported that aftof a careful perusal of the Municipal Corporations and othor Aots likely to bear on the subject, he oould find nothing whioh contemplated etyob^ license fee, and therefore, if the Council wished to prooeed further, it would be nec«B» m]fi enao aby,la,w,
The question of procuring a steam fire engine for the Borough of Ashbnrton, came up at the meeting of the Counoil last night, when it wss shelved for the time being. Shortly after the last meeting of the Council the Mayor and Cr. Friedlander eaoh wrote to i the Fire Insurance Association asking what concessions it would be prepared to make m the event of the Borough deciding to procure I a steamer. The replies m each case were the same, and the Association, evidently, was careful not to commit itself to a definite promise as to the future. Under theso circumstances the Council deoided that it would not be justified m proceeding with the matter further at present. , | The proposal for establishing a Political ) Reform Association at Ashburton has been warmly taken up, and a publio meeting will ' be held m the oourse of a few days for the purpose of forming the Association and also | of disoussing political matters generally. The meeting will probably take place next Monday; : bat the precise date will be advertised. , . To-day's " Press " states that on Saturday i afternoon last a deputation, consisting of Mr John Ferguson and others, waited on Mr E. , G. Wright to request him to come forward as I a candidate for the Akaroa seat. Mr Wright said that he had that day made up his . mind to offer himself as a candidate for the r Avon, and was therefore unable to accede to c their request. Lately diphtheria has been somewhat pre- > valent m this district.
