FAILURE OF THE TARANAKI IRON SMELTING
We are sorry to see that the ironsand smelting experiment at New Plymouth has once more turned out a failure. The correspondent of the " Presi " saye:— No greater success has been achieved m smelting the ironaand at tho prpaent than ih 1876. During 1876, when the furnace iras only kept going a day and a half, the iron producod was over five tone, The present experiment has lasted over five days, and only twelvo tons of iron could be weighed up. In 1876 several good shaped pigs were run, bearing the worda " Taranakl iron," which were sent to the American Exhibition, and one of the pigs is now m the Wellington Museum. Not a good pig has been cast m the present smelting. The quality of the Iron is about the same as that ten years ago. During the present test thirty tons of sand have been run through, and the percentage of iron, therefore, Is equal to 40 per cent. The sand m a pure state contains 66 per oent of iron. The work of cleaning out the furnace was oontlnued to-day, and it is expected Mr Hlpkins will present his report to the Association tj- morrow afternoon.
