ANNIVERSARY TEAMEETING AT TINWALD
The Anniversary Tea Meeting of the Piesbyterian Churoh took place m the Tiawald Hall on Wednesday evening. It was the day on which the traffio was suspended at the Railway biidge owing to heavy floods, and had it not been for improvements gradually mad% by the Tinwald Town Board m letting off surface water and mending its ways, a pub i: o meeting of any kind would have been almost, out of tbe question m such weather. As it was, although the weather had not cleared, the people gathered, and altogether, with old ' I and young and friends from JPlemington and I Willowby, there must have been about a nun- j dred persons present. The' tea tables were provided by Mesdames| Houston, Mehai.y, and Blake, who were ab listed by Mrs Wi" : ama, Misses Rutherford, Houston, Blake, and Ne : l. The Bachelors table was presided over by the Misses Meha.ji/ (3), and Miss Williams. The Hall presented a cheerful appeiance, with the word •' Welcome " m large letters at one end, and an attractive stall for-sale of goods at the other, lighted up with Chinese lanterns. Tt 'a was attended to by Miss Eliza Houston, and the Misses Gairnoross. Tea over, arrangements were quickly made for the public meeting, whioh was presided over by Rev A. Blake. The platform was occupied by a choir, which sung m excellent time and harmony, accompanied on tlte piano by Miaa Blake. A % lolin solo by Mr Wood, entitled "Home, Sweet Home," was accompanied by Miss Rutherford, on the piano, and was so successful that it had to be repeated. Messrs Broadley and Wood accompanied on their violins all the pieces sung with good effect. The Chairman addressed the meeting apologising for the absence of tha Revs R. F. Garbett and A. M. Beattie. He took for his subject, " Taking care of number one," which he treated m a way, both humorous and serious. Rev P. McNicoll, V Swle, and Rev R. Stewart followed, giving exoel'ent addresses on thi sub* jects of Re .ja'ion, Unity among Churches, and Co-operation m congregations rebpeo tively. Mr Sawle thought the attendance under the circumstances indicated that interest was taken m the work of the congregation, and Mr Stewart was very happy m the illustration of his subject, drawing special attention to the operations of the New Zealand Al'iance and the visit of Mr Glover. — Mr Ennis moved a vote of thanks to the ladies who had taken m hand to provide the exce'lent spread they bad had that evening, m a manner which could not be too highly praised, and also to those who had provided the Baoholor's table.
