The news conveyed by notification m the " Gazette," and published m our columns a day or two ago, as to certain Magisterial changes and appointments, is such as happily admits of congratulation to all parties concerned. Mr Baddeley, m obtaining the appointment of Sheriff and assistant Resident Magistrate for the city of Auckland, gains m position, and we presume does not suffer m the matter of emolument — probably the reverse, while the news that his successor m the office of Resident Magistrate for the districts of Ashturton and Geraldine is our old friend, John Ollivier — hejwill excuse the " Mr," for everybody likes him too well to use it when speaking of him — will be received with general approval. Mr Ollivier has for some two years past — perhaps more — been Resident Magistrate at Lyttelton, and appears to have discharged -the duties of his responsible office to the entire content of the public and of the legal profession, and we have no doubt that the results of his administration at Ashburton will be equally satisfactory. The Minister of Justice is to be congratulated on having made a very wise disposition and of having achieved the usually impossible task of pleasing everybody all round. . '
