LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At a meeting of the Directors of the Caledonian Sooioty last night, it was resolved to hold the next Inglesido meeting m the OddtellowB 1 Hall on Monday, the 11th instant, at 7.30 p.m. The monthly meeting of the Winalow Diatriot School Committee was held m the local Sohoolroom on Saturday last. Present —Messrs Wilson, Grace, Drennon, and Harris. After reading and confirming the minutea of the previous meeting, the Master's report was read; the working average was herein stated to be— Boys, 13*1 ; girls, 13*4 ; total, 2G-5 ; roll number, 38. On the motion of Mr Grace, it wbb resolved, that tenders be oalled for trimming the fence round the school ground, to be mby next meeting. The Chairman reported having purchased sundry articles. Accounts having been passed for payment, a vote of thanks to Mr Grace* terminated the meeting. A grand Masonio bazaar, under the auspices of the Somerset Lodge, will be held early m December. The proceeds will be devoted towards extinguishing the debt on the hall. Extensive preparations are being made to render the affair successful. It was expected that the Proclamation dissolving Parliament would be gazetted to-day, as also the appointment of Returning Officers and polling plaoes. In the Supreme Court Criminal Sitting, a Ohriatohurch, yesterday, the Grand Jury found no true bills m the following cases, viz. :— Bdgina v Martha Blytb, concealment of birth; Regina v Trevenna, breaking into with intent ; Regina v Toner and Bullevant, perjury. George W. Forster, forgery and uttering, was sentenced to two years' hard labor; James Anderson, larceny, placed on probation for twelve months and to pay £10 towards the cost of proseoution ; Noel Peat, breaking and entering, one year's hard labor Harry Wakefield, breaking and entering acquitted* The ordinary monthly meeting of the Tinwald Town Board was held on Friday evening. Present— Messrs Clark (Chairman) , Shearer, Scott, and Jephson. Messrs Scaly and Thomas waited on the Board and asked that something should bo done to Carter's Terrace, which was almost impassable. Mi Schneider also waited on the Board tc water lying at oorner of Laghmor road and Melcombe street. It was subsequently resolved to call for tenderß for Bhingling the oentre of Carter's Terrace as far as Grove street, forming to full width part of Laghmor road, and forming footpath and ride channel along south-east side of part of Harland street, tenders to be mby next Saturday. Corres, pondenoe waß read from Rev R. F, Garbett and Mr Jeffs re rates on part of Grove Farm Estate, It was resolved to take a legal opinion on the matter. After passing accounts and transacting routine business, the Board adjourned. The half yearly meeting of the Aahburton Lodge, U.A.0.D., was held m the Arcade Chambers, last night, There was a very large attendance. The District President, Bro Brooks, from Oamaru, was present, and performed the installation of the following officers :— Bro R. Clark, Arch Druid ; Bro H. A. Veßty, Vice-Arch ; Bro W. S. Potter (re), Secretary; Bro R. Elston (re), Treasurer; Bro T. Wall, M.S. ; Bro J. H, Pauling, P. Arch Druid ; Bro H; A. Pickford, A.8. ; Bro G. Keeley, A.8. ; Bros J. C. Causey and W, R. Piokford, V.A.8. ; Bro Underhill, 1.G. ; Bro C. Brown, O.G. After the offioers had been installed, Bro F. Steel, ,the O.P.A.D. waß presented with a very handsomely framed diploma by Bro Potter, who, on behalf of the lodge, Bpoke m the highest terms of the valuable service rendered by Bro Steel during his term of office. Bro Steel replied man appropriate manner. It was resolved unanimously Jlo apply for a charter to open a District Grand Lodge for the middle Island of New Zealand. Five t new members were proposed and the. Lodge then closed, and the members partook of a tea and coffte supper. After having done justice to the good things, a very pleasant oveniDg was spent. The hounds meet > to-morrow (Wednesday) at 11.30 a.m. at Mr Wm. Hartnell's, Como, Rakaia, and on Saturday, 9th inst, at 1.30 p.m., at Elgin bridge. Messrs Friedlander Bros, announce that the Japanese gooda advertised for sale by auction on Thursday, under the hammer of Mr P. Williams, will be open for inspection today and to-morrow, between the hours of 3 and 5, and 7.30 and 9 p.m. Having been favored with a private view, we can safely assert that they are not only well worth going to see, but many of them so covetable a3 to be certain to attract considerable competition at the hands of those who, recognising that a thing of beauty is a joy for ever, like their homes to be iurnished with articles of elegance and taste.
