In another column appears a telegram setting forth the boundaries of the two electorates m which this district is interested. The old Ashburton electorate has been reduced m area but inoreased m population, it taking m the townships of Bakaia, Tinwald andHampstead Wakanui has been done away with, and the portions that have not been absorbed by Ashburton, have been added to a new distriot called Bangitata. This also takes m the old Geraldine electorate and portion of the old ABhburton electorate. A general description of the boundaries of the other electorates came to hand too late for publication.
Thursday's " Gazette " notifies that M r John Ollivier has been appointed Resident Magistrate for the Districts of Ashburton, Geraldine, and Timaru, with extended jurisdiction to £100. Mr H. C. S. Baddeley has been appointed Sheriff and Assistant-Resident Magistrate at Auokland. The same " Gazette" contains a notification of the appointment of Mr C. W. Purnell as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Ashburton Racecourse Rerservs vice Dr Bobs resigned, and of Sergeant Felton as Inspector of Weights and Measures for the borough and county of Ash-
burton.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Ashburton Hospital Board was held at the County Council Chambers on Friday afternoon. Present: Messrs W. C. Walker (chairman), A. Harrison, and T. Scaly.— A list of patients admitted and disobarged during the month was laid before the Committee. — The matron complained of the conduct an assistant, andDr Trevor, the Enrgeon, forwarded a report on the matter. It was resolved to discharge the assistant m question, and to invite tenders for the position thus rendered' vaoant.— The tender of E. Vinten to collect outstanding accounts at a commission of 25 per cent, was aooepted. — Boutine business was transacted, accounts passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
It will be remembered that a few week? ago a man named William Henry Hawkiriß pleaded guilty to two charges of obtaining sums of money by raeqins of 'valueless cheques. He was placed undar. tile operation of the Probation Aot for'/ six months, on his assurance that he would pay the costs of the prosecution, and would meet the cheques when a remittance, which he stated was sent him from Home, oame to hand. It was arranged that this money should have been paid by Saturday last, but on that day it was not forthcoming. Hawkins was, therefore, again arrested and brought up at the B.M. Court this morning, before Mr E. Aloorn, J.P., and Mr T. Bullock, J.P. He stated that the remittance he expected had not yet arrived. In the absence of the Probation Officer Hawkins was remanded for a week, to be brought up m the meantime should the Officer have returned.
On Jubilee Day the Sydney Mint struck 250 sovereigns from s new die m which Her Majesty's head appears m widowed garb and of mature age. These sovereigns were of course m great demand, and from 25s upwards was freely paid for them as curios.
