ADVENTURES OF COCKNEY SETTLER.
The twen'y-fifth anniversary t of. the Albertland Nonconformist Settlement Was celebrated at Pur t Albert (Auckland) on May 29th, 'when several of the seitJera related their exporieneiß. Mr Little, Paparoa, gave an amusing; account of his first handling of a cow. He said he was a bred cockney. He thought he would like to be a farmer. He got some land to start at Paparoa, He went to Manga wai to buy a cow. and gave £13 for one cow worth 10a.. This was i.fcls i first experience m pastoral pursuits. He started to dnve. it home. Coming to a rivar he got some fbx, made a, linj, put it, on the cow's horns went on the other side and tried to pull it over. He was not strong enough to do so. A friend pausing by kindly assisted by touching the cow up behind. The cow pulled him into a gully and nrarly broke his thigh. He was all night m the bash as a comequence. At the end of three days he got the f cow home; In the course of nature the 'cow had a. calf He did'ut know what to do with' it. Ha wife said she thought it must ba kept warm, as it kept crying so. They, put the calf indoors near the chimney. He coaMn'fc milk ; he tried and the cow kicked him over, but the little boy nrlkcd her. The calf wouldn't drink the milk, and he had to get a teapot and put a leather teat on the spout; To make the c*lf secure for the night, he put it u^der his little boy's bed.. He took the cupboard door off its hinges, and" peo'ured the cilf unde: the bed. Bah ! The calf bunted the boy out of bed. A neighbor told him put his finger m the calf'a mouth, and it would drink.
