BOROUGH COUNCIL

The ordinary fortnightly meeting was held last evening. Present — The Mayor, and Councillors Williamson, R, Friedlander, Taoker, Harrison, Reid, H. Friedlander.

The Miyor said that tho debit balance at the bank was £1034 2s 6d. The amounts whioh had been received since last meeting were : —Library aooount, 9 ; ; pipes sold, £2 14s 2d ; Canterbury Mills, £13 12a lOd ; licenses, excise, £45 ; do pnblio buildings, £1 ; rents of Reserves, £7 103 ; rates, 1887, £7 11a.

CORRESPONDENCE. I Loiters were read (1) From Ghatl'able Aid Board, requesting payment of balance of contribution, £48 2s lid. — Ree< l^ed to pass amount for payment.— (2) From Property Tax Department enclosing form of declaration for subsidy due. — The Mayor pointed out that the Government had paid subsidy on £375 inßtnad of £750, as had been anticipated. —lt wan deoided to fill up the form, and if tbe Government did not pay on £750, to aik them for an explanation. — (3) From the Orown Lands Office, stating that the Borough had more acreage of reserves vested In it than was allowed by tie Land Aot, 1885. -(4) From l£r T. H. Zouoh, calling attention to trap door of cellar on West Street being m dangerous state, and to water overflowing footpath m same street,— Referred to Engineer. — (6) From Ladies Jnbilee Committee, Ohristohurch, requesting the Mayor to call a meeting of Indies to consider the question of establishing a fund to be nsed as suggested by Lady Jervois. — The matter was left m the hands of the Mayor with power to aot. engineers' bbpori.

The Engineers reported as -follows J — River Enoroaohment : The portion of the outer plantation m No. 2 paddook on the river reserve was soourad away by the freab on Friday. The foreman managed to save the fence, and there has been go more damage done Binoo Saturday. It will ba necessary to pat m two or three small strong groins of gorse fasolnes. The labor gang, owing to the holidays and wet weather, have not been able to do much besides repairing and maintenance work. The William street and West Btreet work was stopped by the ground being too much Boaked by the wet. The general routine work has been attended to. Cause 1 was referred to the Work Committee, the remainder of the report being adopted. PUBLIC BUILDINGS. In reply to Or 11. Friedlandor, it was atated thit ss yet only the management of the Oddfellows' Ball had paid the lioense fee due by 0 public building. MRB EKOINE. .. In reply to Or R. Frledlander, the Mayor stated that m consequence of the holidays be had been unable to call a meeting of ratepayers to consider the question of procuring a steam fice engine. It was his intention, however, to call a publio meeting before the next meeting of tho 4 0onnoil. XICKNSKB, It was resolved to notify owners of pnblio buildings to take out licenses, m default of which proceedings would be Instituted, JUEIL".E. A vote of thanks wab passed to the Mayor for the manner m wliich he had oairle£ cut the Councils part m regard to the Jubilee celebration. Several Councillors alluded to the part taken by the Mayor, to whom the nucoess of tbe celebration, whioh would have boon a oredit to a muoh larger town th*n Ashburton, was dae, 11 cheap jacks." Cr H, Friedlander alluded to the d - s>r ability of compelling " Oheip-Jaoka," etc., to pay a fee for tho privilege of celling ther wares within the Borough. The Mayor was requested to look iito the matter, and see if anything could be done. BATES The Mayor pointed out that the rates for the current year were coming lz very, slowly.
