Qrbymodts, June 27. Mr Edimticl Riok«, one of tho earltait agitators foe the hut and the Weat Ooast Railway, sent a mem&nto of the turning of the first sod of the Midland Railway to Mr Thomas Salt, M.P. fof Stafford, and Chairman of the Midland Railway Company. By the lait mail ha received a very appreciative reply, and. amongst other things Mr Salt says— *' We must all work together In a generoni and friendly spirit so as to en* sure the speedy completion of oar great undertaking. I hope that oar N«w Zealand friends will not be discouraged if doubts delays aud troubles should arist. Every large enterprise has been driven through almost endless dlffioalties by good nense and quiet courage, and we Intend to make the railway as a great national work with as little delay as possible, and wo r&ly confidently on thfe oantiuuoßl nnpporfc of every (sensible man m New Z aland." In a footnote the writer say* — "It is essential that the Und oonoes* sions should bo placed In a tangible form if yon want to attraot Knglish money." Remarkable good progress is being made with Brown'a Nelson Greek seotion. Visitors from town express surprise at 1 the quantity of work done la bo short s> r* time.
