Mr Peter Oliphant, of Auckland, was struck I y this, and, believing there was an error boot e where, wont carefully through the Statement to fiud it, . In a letter to the local " Herald" he prints the result of his research- Sir Juliu3 counted twice. over the back deposits amounting to £5,000 000 He coauted it once (n the individual returns, and then included it m " Personal property m produce, agricultural implements, bank deposits, and vessels (steam and sailing) amounting t0£7, 830,8 11, is not included In owners' statements." An it happens, bank deposits are Included m owners' fctatementa, as Mr Oliphant proves by giving several Instances where depositors who omitted that item m their returns- h-vd their papers returned for rectification. — H.B.
