THE FANCY DRESS BALL

The Jubilee rejoioinga m Aehburton were very appropriately wound up last evening by ft grand military and fancy dresa ball at the Oddfellows' Hall, whioh presented an exceedingly charming speotaole. The room was well lit up and moat tastefully deoorated, the walls befog draped and festooned with flags and evergreens, and adorned with silver gilt battlo-axea and stars of bayonets, over one of the latter being displayed the voluntoer motto, " Semper Paratus." The attendance numbered about 140, and the soene was a yorj brilliant one, the fancy dresseß being Vary varied and m nearly all oasos m excellent taste, and there being a goodly sprinkling off the scarlet uniforms of our oitizen soldiers, andj, the blue) and silver of the Fire Brigade. Among the ladies we notiood the " picturesque costumes Jof Switzerland, Italy and Bohemia, mingling with the oap and gown of the •• sweet girl graduate," the star sprinkled robes of Night, the gay tartans of Soottiah dans, and a host of picturesque figures which seemed to have been picked oat of all the oentnrie» and from «ve*y nation upon earth, while among the gentlemen were the, North Amerioan Indian, the. Zulu Obi&f, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, sailors jockeys, footballers, and soldiers galore The sapper, laid oat on the stage, was provided by Mr W. O. Davis, confectioner, ana. was exceedingly tastefully, aa woll as liberally famished, and the floor and tha mufcio being all that could bis doaircd, .it is not surprising that the whole affair was Unanimously voted one(of the most successful {hingi of tho kind ever seen m Ashburton.
