HARDLEY'S WASHER IN CHRISTCHURCH

— ».-•.. • . i ... " Lyttelton Times." On Saturday afternoon a steam washing machine, invented and made by Mr S. Hardley, of Ashburton, wan pat to a praotloal test m Messrs Reeoe and Co.'b yard, m Ihe presence of a considerable number of persons, The results of the trial were deciuedly satiafactory, a larga oolleotlon of articles, more or less dirty, being well olensed In a short spaoa of time. The machine consists of a drum of galvanised iron revolving la a c~.ae of the same material. A jot of steam Is admitted through a short pipe from an ordinary washing boiler into thia or. .c, whence it finds its way into the drum through holes punched m the end, and m certain indentations around the side. These indentations aot m a somewhat similar way to the wooden slats' in som<t Other washing machines, turning the clothes placed m the drum over and over m the latter revolves." A piece of soap and a dipperf ul of water are placed with the clothes m the drum, whloh is turned by means of a handle. When the olothes are soffiolantly cleansed, the machine is tilted op and they are thrown lato a tab placed beneath. Mr Hard'ey states that he makes the machine of copper instead of galvanised iron. In either material it is likely to prove a very useful article m the household. The "Press," after describing the maohine says "Ft oan be made of copper or galvanised Iron, and attached to any common portable washing boiler. The Wear and tear of the machine is likely to be very little indeed, and it is ftp: parently an artiole which will find considerable favor with housewives and ! others." i ■'■-■•- ' ' ' ■ <
