Mr McLean n>o red the adjournment of the debate tiU to-morrow, Messrs Buckley and others opposed the attempt to burke tlio measure m the last •tage. The motion for adjournment was lost by 16 to 14. The Council iosirted on its'amendments, •nd managers were appointed for a con. ference. WIST COAST SETTLEMENT RESERVES. Mr Buckley moved the second reading of tbe West Coast Settlement Reserves Bill. Dr Pollen also protested against important legislation being turn) led nto the Council without due time to examine into it. This Bill ought to be referred to the Native Affairs Committee.
Messrs Mantel I, Richmond, and Miller spoke m the same strain, Mr Olliver thought some hopes should be gives to suffering tenants of their cose being considered next session.
Mr Swanson gave notice to move an amendment applying the principles of the Act to all leasts of any kind. Mr Taiaroa'o amendment was carried by 17 to 11; and the second reading lost. NATIVE BESERVES. Mr Buckley moved the second reading of the South Island Native Reserves Act Amendment Bill. Dr Pollen reiterated hfs objections to settling such important questions off hand, and moved that it be read that day three weeks. Mr Shrimski pointed out the great hardships that would follow if the Bill were not immediately passed. Mr Taiaroa opposed the Bill at length. He threatened to resist x it at every stage. Mr Lahman contended the Bill was absolutely necessary. Maori owners would obtain great advantages. On a division the second reading was ioßtbyietoll. The Council adjourned temporarily.
