Campbell, a butoher, oharged at this morniog's sitting of the Police Court w*th having false weights m his poneiaion, ra ; ied m extenuation of hie offence four points, of which three certainly had the charm of novelty. The firat of the four wr : that he had bought the welgh'i m Innocence of their being light ; the seoond was that he and bh w'fe were so out np'at being summoned thtt they hri shot up shop and were going to leave the oouotry ; the third plea was that although he told meat with the li^ht weight!, several of his customers did not paf him ; while the laiit, end possibly the moit original of the lot, w: 1 that he had • brother who had borne a good oharaoter for twenty five ye^rs. All were of no avail, for the Magistrate decided to inflict a fine, whioh the defendant paid with rot remark that It waa the last money h« would over pay to the Court.
