The meet of the Ashburton hounds of yesterday at Mr George Graham's, Winoh. more road, proved one of the best afternoon's Bport of the season ; the first hare was found on the property of Mr E. G. Wright, towards Laureston, but only gave a short run, as it made for bare wire country, and the hounds were whipped off with some difficulty, the first three jumps being gorae with double wires, and only very few of the forty persons out oared to taokle them. After some delay a fine hare was found, and crossed the Lauriston road to Mr O'Grady's property, where she f luatted. All who are interested m the preservation of timber wiil be glad to hear of Professor Poleck'i discovery that timber whioh has been long immersed m water is thereby rendered free from liability to dry rot. He explains the fact by showing that water slowly dissolves alj the nutritious albuminoids, etc, out of the wood, and thus deprives the dry-rot fungus of its necessary food. Those who doubt the pre. sorvative aotion of water may try the following simple experiment, Take two portions Of sawdust from freshly-out timber, bury one m a damp place at once, but let the other be soaked for a week or two m an abundant quantity of fresh water. Afterwards, bury the latter m the same place as the former The first sample of sawdust will rot away m a few years, but the second will be found to suffer no change beyond a mere darkening of color. A novel method of carrying money is resorted to by a Chinese vegetable vendor who does business m Wellington. John Lad occasion to pay six or soven shillings the other day to a tradesman m the city, whom he electrified by extracting the money from one of his ears. Thinking that there might he some sleight-of-hand business about the feat the tradesman expressed surprise at the unusual nature of the reoeptaole, whereupon the Celestial turned round and called atten. tion to several coins inside hn otLer ear. Tho Maori, who so proudly carries his cutty pipe suspended from the lobo of his ear, must now acknowledged that his yellow skinned brother has found a more praotioal use for the organ. Tho Wellington Woollen Company intend to try New South Wales as a market for their tweeds, and are having light tweeds manufactured to suit the climate.
