Wellington, June 6. An* accident of a serious oatare, by which a one-legged expressman, named ! Clifford, sustained injuries whioh may deprive him of hia remaining leg, ooour red to-day. His horse bolted, and Clifford waa thrown oat. On examination it was found he had a compound oommlnated : fracture of the left leg just above the ankle, and his left arm had been fraotured while hU head wao a!io seriously knooked about. Greymouth, Jane 6. At the Harbor Board meeting this even* ing, after the usual routine business was gone through, Mr Petrie asked what other business there was. The Chairman said to discuss a motion tv resolnd a former resolution regarding the employment of day labor, of which notice was given at the last meeting. Mr Petrie said he bad important business to attend to, and when leaving the room called attention to the fact that there was no quorum. This was carrying out a threat made at the laat meeting, consequently the Boford uonld do no more business, ' - i This afternoon the Mayor headed a jiossa of men with crowbars and other lmplamenti, and proceeded to remove iron rails placed on the Cobdca bridge by Meaera Hungerf ord and Maokay for taking material acroas to their contraot on the north bank of the river. It was alleged on behalf of the Corporation that Mr Maokay (Mr -Hungerford being away) pledged his word to remove the rails today. He alleges that . the Ma for pro* mlaod him compsneation, and that he wsb advised that if he lifted the ralti voluntarily, or allowed them to be lifted without formal protest, he could not get compensation, consequently be sent • lawyer's letter, protesting against the removal cf the rails. A oonfliot wai apprehended, but the men pnt on by the Mayor were not molested la any way. Dunkdin, June 6. A public meeting wan held to-night at Mornington under the auspices of the Protection League. One of the audience, named Bradley, attempted to speak on the freetrade side, but was prevented by a storm of groans and hisaes. The Chairman asked that ho be allowed a patient hearing, but the interruptions oontlnued as long as he endeavored to speak. Ikveroargill, June* 6. J.ihnK.
