A trial recently took place at Odessa before the Chief Tribunal, m which the late City Governor of Odessa and a number of officials were implicated. The indiotment ooeupied eight hours m reading, The ohargea of wholeBale bribery and peculation whioh it contained were almost incredible. This trial had been tending about two years. One hundred and twenty-Bix witnesses were subpoenaed. The trial, after lasting more than eight days, terminated with the acquittal of all the accused The publio prosecutor will appeal to the Senate. The evidenoe given by 150 witnesses for the Crown went to show the prevalence of a system of corruption, peoulatiofi, and organised blackmailing on the part of responsible offloiala. The industry of violin-making has been started by a resident of Jnveroargill, Mr O Eternan, who has demonstrated the adapt* ability of New Zealand timbers. for the pur* pose. The instrument turned out by M c Kiernan is thus desoribed by the ' Southland News ' ;— " The belly and baok are of red pine, the bridge, finger-board, and pega of maplei while the inlaying is of white pine. The total eunual expenditure by the French Government on its horse breeding establishment amounts to £269,720. The Government Of Austria gives something over £80,000, and that of Hungary £116,000 a year towards tbe encouragoment of boree-breediug. In Prussia the cost of the breeding establishments may be roughly estimated at £80,000. The ' Insurance and Banking Eecord ' thus winds up an artiole upon the pastoral interest: — Taking everything into consideration, we doubt whether the squatting industry of Australia was ever m sounder position than it is m to-day, or whethor prospects for three or four years ahead were ever brighter. Many capitalists who waited ,forjyears until they oould invest m stations at the lowest point have already found themselves . ' a day behind tbe fair.' But, while even at the proeont moment a number of good stations oan ; be bought at very moderate prices, it is by no means improbable that the near future may witness an improvement m the values of stations quite equal to those whioh have so often occurred m Australia after the industry- has recovered from tho effeots of a severe depression. - The dead bodies of two men, named Finn and Grant, were found a |few weeks ago m Smugville Brickworks, Belfast. I at once took all pains to seoure xnedioal assistance. However, m spite of all efforts, on the 27th August, 1877, the opinion was given by Maegillivray that an amputation of the injured limb had become imperative m order to save life. At this janotare I called on Messrs Sander and Sons, procuring some of their Extract of the Eucalyptus Globulua, and by the application of the same I had the satisfaction of seeing my son within a fortnight out of all danger, and to-day he is recovered.
