A ourious hypothesis has been Btartod by an eminent member of tho medioal faoulty m Paris, It has been observed that many of the Nihilist conspirators m liussia are physically frail, timid, and nervous m temperament, highly impressionable, and not composed of the stern stuff of which regicides are usually made. The theory put forth to account for their desparate attempts on tho life of tho Czar is that they have been hypnotised by raau of a stronger will and great magnetic powar, and that the would-be aßsasaina are thus the involuntary instruments of their hypnotisers.
Magnetism, so oallodjfroru Magnes, a shoperd, who is said to have been detained at Mount Ida by the daila m his boots. The attractive power gf tho loadstone or magnet was early .known, and is referred to by Homor, Aristotle, and Pliny ; it was also known to the Chineso and Arabians. The Greeks are said to have obtained the loadstone from Magnesia m Asia, v.c. 1000; Roger Bacon is Bttidjto have been acquainted with its proporty of pointing to the; North (12U1). The invoutiou of the mariner's ooinpaßs is asoiibcd to Fla'vio Gioia.fa Neapolitan, about 1310 ; but it waa known m Norway previous to 1266, aud is mentioned m Frenoh poem 1150.
